Jazz Investigator Sessions

In this session you will learn to play a tune of your choice from the Crazy Chord List

Confusion City...

Most people who start learning to play jazz get rather overwhelmed. If this is you, then you’re not alone. There is just so much information out there. Theory books, YouTube videos, and other tutorial materials. The trouble is how do you know what will get you the results you want. There are so many different ways of looking at it and so many approaches. Many people use different terms for the same things. There are also many things about playing jazz which you can’t get from a book. The people who just try to understand the theory without knowing how to apply it often end up giving up, because there’s so much more to it than just the theory.

I was fortunate in a number of ways:

  1. I was given some of the best materials to get my head around at a very young age.
  2. I had a lot of advice and guidance from friends and mentors who were already playing jazz at the highest level.
  3. I had a lot of playing opportunities to learn my craft on the bandstand.
  4. I was able to practice 6 hours a day throughout my teenage years.

Even, so it took many years of work to be able to be able to learn the things I needed to play at the level I can today. In the process, I have developed many tools and strategies to get the best out of my practice and performance. I feel fortunate that I can now share the methods to help people to shortcut the amount of time I spent getting it together, and provide a clear path to success playing jazz.

What Students Are Saying...

Jack Adamson

"Amazing teacher! Very knowledgable and talented. Very flexible lessons, if I ever want to learn anything specific topics or songs I have access to in depth tuition. Tommy is also happy to lend his creative abilities if I ever need help finding chords or melodies for my own compositions”

Heather McGinty

"I started lessons with Tommy as a complete beginner in Piano, my goal was to be able to play the blues and rock tunes I love. Tommy has taken me step by step through theory, reading music, techniques and improvisation, moulding the lessons to equally match my interest with learning progressively more complex pieces. Online lessons are convenient, and successfully maintains that hands on learning you need. 10/10 teacher - I would recommend him to anyone!"

Cal Herron

"An incredibly skilled pianist with a deep understanding of music across a large range of genres. Has helped me develop largely by giving me direction and guidance in my practice, and b constantly teaching me new and interesting material and knowledge. A great teacher and person who I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to learn piano and expand their knowledge of music.”

But Do Online Lessons Work?

Actually, provided you have a stable internet connection, online jazz piano lessons can work better than in person lessons.

I use an overhead camera so you can see what I play clearly. You can record lessons to refer back to afterwards. I use a video platform called Muzie, which has been specifically designed for music lessons, and gives a good quality sound, as well as the capability to play together.
